Pride 2017 — Peace, love, and 20,000 condoms

Planned Parenthood volunteers, staff, and supporters showed their PRIDE at the 43rd annual San Diego Pride Parade. Planned Parenthood is proud to be part of the LGBT community — many of our patients, staff, volunteers, and supporters are gay, lesbian, transgender, or bisexual people. And we share a fundamental belief that all people should have equal rights, including access to health care.

Close to 150 volunteers distributed 20,000 condoms (the most we’ve ever handed out), 1,000 dental dams, sunscreen, and stickers while others held signs and danced their way through the crowd. Music was provided by DJ Latina. Thank you so much to everyone who helped — whether it was making posters for the big day or participating in the event. Pictures, courtesy of Jeeheon Cho, have been posted to the Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest Facebook page. We hope you had a blast!

Doctors Take Down Myths Surrounding Abortion

Want to know the real deal about abortion? Ask the doctors who provide them. These doctors dispelled myths, gave a step-by-step description of the procedure, and talked about the satisfaction and challenges of providing abortions. Here are a few of our favorite quotes; the first one is from our medical director here at Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest: Continue reading Doctors Take Down Myths Surrounding Abortion

Why Intersectionality Matters for Reproductive Health Care

No longer confined to women’s and gender studies university courses, the term intersectionality has increasingly appeared in articles in mainstream outlets from USA Today to the Huffington Post, as journalists have tried to make sense of the resurgence of feminist awareness and activism spurred by the massive Women’s March on Washington (and its sister marches worldwide) held this past January. Despite the fact that intersectionality has been gaining some traction in the press lately, there still seems to be some confusion as to what the term actually means.
