The Chairs of the 53rd Anniversary Dinner, Rosette Garcia and Dan Kisner, trace their ardent support of Planned Parenthood to a Sunday over a decade ago when anti-abortion protestors infiltrated their UU church, disrupting the talk of the invited guest, then-CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest Mark Salo. This distressing event led Dan and Rosette, already Planned Parenthood allies, to step up their support, which has increased steadily over the years. Here’s why they said yes to Planned Parenthood:
First, Jennifer Lawrence took a fierce stance on equal pay, writing a powerful essay, which made an appearance in Lena Dunham’s newsletter Lenny that tackled the income disparities women face in the workforce. Now, she’s taken a vocal stand against the attacks on Planned Parenthood during an interview with Glamour magazine.
We have all heard the statistics on the reproductive health disparities among women: The rates of unintended pregnancy for African American women and Latinas are nearly 2.5 and 2 times, respectively, the rate of White women. African American women are the mostly likely to die in pregnancy and childbirth.
Celebs were pushing back against sexist remarks in a big way this year, and Huffington Post put together a list of the top 15 Times Famous Women Shutdown Sexism in 2015. We were especially proud of our very own Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards who shut down GOP attacks on women’s health care at a senate hearing earlier this year.
Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest’s Latina Leadership Academy just celebrated its first graduating class! Thanks to the generous support of The California Endowment, the academy is now one of the Coachella Valley’s most innovative and forward-thinking youth leadership programs, training the next generation of reproductive justice advocates with an intensive 15-month curriculum.
